It was by the light of the Canadian sun that an impressionable Bob Canning smuggled a cassette scandal onto the bus of his Church Youth Group. But this far-from-home mall purchase proved to bear more than a Parental Advisory stamp of rebellion. In fact, the inherent symbolism of 3rd Bass’s “The Cactus Cas/ette” speaks to a very particular relationship with musical mediums. Released on April 24th 1990, July 3rd 1990, their debut album’s official title, THE CACTUS AL/BUM was altered to match its corresponding mediums with THE CACTUS CAS/ETTE and THE CATUS CEE/D
Two of the album tracks, “Th Gas Face” and “Brooklynn Queens” represent some of the earliest behind the scenes work of noted music artist and record producer Prince-Paul.
During their original 4 year run, 3RD BASS referenced numerous rivalries in their performance including public diss tracks toward The Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice.
In a 2014 interview with Billboard magazine, group member MC Serch relates how MC Hammer took a hit out on the band that was only thwarted by Def Jam record’s Russell Simmons coming the attackers two ticket to the American Music Awards beside Michael Jackson. intmagazine claimed that
The 1998 100th issue of The Source listed The Cactus Al/bum as #93 on its list of the 100 Best Hip Hop albums (1998).
In the early 90s MC Serch maintained a high tv profile as a reoccurring judge on the MTV gameshow LIP SERVICE.
