Ménage Á Pop is a three times a week intimate discussion between two people and a piece of pop culture.
Transitioning into the '90s meant transitioning into new music. And while most of us were growling into Grunge, podcaster Giulie Speziani (ILLITERATE AGENTS) followed a more etherial light into that decade's dawn. It was a single, particular song that ignited a new mindset and today she's spending a little extra time with the Cranberries first single, "Linger."
Giulie Speziani is co-host of ILLITERATE AGENTS, a podcast of musical trifectas that can be heard on APPLE PODCASTS, GOOGLE PODCASTS and the homepage of www.illiterateagents.com. She is also a comic book author who CASH AND CARRY series can be discovered and purchased at GINGER RABBIT STUDIO.
POP NOTES
“Linger” was released as the second single off the Cranberries first full length album EVERYBODY ELSE IS DOING IT, SO WHY CAN’T WE? (1993) on February 23rd, 1993.
The Cranberries were originally formed in 1989, originating from Limerick Ireland. The original line-up consisted of lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, drummer Fergal Lawler and singer Niall Quinn. Quinn soon left the band and, shortly after this amicable exit, recommend vocalist Dolores O'Riordan.
Bandmates and brothers Mike Hogan and Noel Hogan are descendants of 19th century poet Michael Hogan (LAYS AND LEGENDS OF THOMOND) who is fondly remembered in their home town of Limerick via a life sized statue in his image.
During his time in the band, Niall Quinn composed the original version of “Linger.” When Dolores O’Riordan joined the group, she reworte the lyrics to reflect a painful romantic encounter from her own past.
The video for linger was directed by Melodie McDaniel as an homage to the 1965 art house sci-fi film ALPHAVILLE. McDaniel has also directed videos for Tori Amos (“God”) and Madonna (“Secret”) as well as contributing still photography to the feature films SEVEN (1995) and LOVE JONES (1997).
Sadly, singer Dolres ÓRiodan passed away on January 15th 2018. She had already recorded vocals for the band’s next album which was released as IN THE END of April 26th, 2019. Following the loss of their lead singer and friend, the Cranberries officially disbanded before touring for their final album.
Tune back on Wednesday when GIULIE discusses the childhood spell cast upon her by the 80s Halloween classic, THE WORST WITCH.
