Nothing says Halloween like the annual network broadcast of IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN so, thanks again, 2020. In its absence, Bob and Tim are watching another animated classic now owned by another streaming service. It's the first three SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORRORS, back when it was still known as THE SIMPSONS HALLOWEEN SPECIAL and before it was called ANOTHER EPISODE OF THAT SHOW I USE TO WATCH. Good grief, its the first time they're talking about The Simpsons!

POP NOTES

  • THE SIMPSONS debuted as a series of animated shorts during the first three  seasons of THE TRACEY ULMAQN SHOW (1987).  This was followed by their first half hour,  THE SIMPSONS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE, airing on December 17th, 1989.  The series premiered shortly after that with “Bart The Genius” on January 14th, 1990.

  • Creator Matt Groening had originally intended to pitch animated shorts based on his independent comic book LIFE IN HELL.  Shortly before his meeting he sketched out early versions of the Simpsons family and presented them instead.

  • Groening’s original concept was to reveal Marge as a giant rabbit (her hairstyle designed to hide her ears) and Homer to be Kid’s show host KRUSTY THE CLOWN.  Both of these concepts were soon abandoned as the show became popular.

  • Prior to being voiced by Harry Shearer (THIS IS SPINAL TAP)  antagonist Mr. Burns was originally voiced by comedian and legendary voice actor Chris Latta, best known as the voices of 80s animation staples Starscream (THE TRANSFORMERS) and Cobra Commander (GI JOE).

  • With it’s 167th episode (season 8’s “The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show” ) THE SIMPSONS outpaced THE FLINTSTONES as the longest, consecutively running animated series on network television. With season 29’s “Forgive And Regret” THE SIMPSONS surpassed GUNSMOKE’s 635 episode count to become the longest running scriptied series in American broadcast history.
