20th Century Popcast is a podcast that tries to understand the present by living in the past. Each week hosts Bob and Tim take a sociological look at the pop culture of the '80s and '90s. Its a ruining of their childhood that hopefully explains how they became adults.
BINGE AND PODCAST: "Bub, Sugah and Mon Ami " (1992): If there’s one thing Tim's wanted to do since this show began its talk comic books. But seeing how no one is interested in The Inhumans, he and Bob have decided to don the yellow spandex of X-Men: The Animated Series. Good luck with all that continuity.
00:00:00 - PRE-SHOW PRATTLE - equipment failure
00:00:49 - X-CRUTIATING OPENER - puns and poor research / “Outsider”
00:04:20 - A SEMI-PENETRABLE UNIVERSE - Saturday morning fan service
00:11:51 - BACK ISSUE BONANZA - and a bunch of names that might not mean anything
00:20:53 - AN UNCANNY X-MESS - sloppy backgrounds and Gambit’s accent
00:26:44 - DYSTOPIAN MORNING CARTOONS - bleak futures and ethical conundrums
00:34:09 - AND THAT’S HOW TIME TRAVEL WORKS - intricately arranging its continuity
00:39:35 - ROGUE GALLERY - portraits of an origin story
00:48:24 - DEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT - Bob gets how Tim gets this (and then it sort of peters out)
00:53:01 - CLOSINGS - Contacts, plugs and no catchphrase / “Black Star”
Watch the hard-core metal sequence that opened this series when it aired in Japan HERE.
And watch the second season opener from Japan (where, if I am not mistaken, they start by detonating the actual X-Men) HERE.
Hear how catchier that awesome (awful?) opening could have been with the lyrics of the 1989 X-Men pilot "Pryde Of The X-Men" HERE. (also ... is that Mark Hamill doing the narration?)
Check out COMIC BOOK RESOURCES loving retrospective on what went wrong with this animated series (currently celebrating its 25th anniversary) HERE.
And watch the four episodes discussed, X-TERNALLY YOURS, TIME FUGITIVES PART ONE and TWO and A ROGUES TALE all currently streaming at HULU.com.
