JAWS

20th Century Pop! is a podcast where hosts Bob and Tim take a sociological look at the pop culture of the '80s and '90s.

122 JAWS (1975)

Tim has a pretty solid reason for not going to the beach this year.  And last year.  And pretty much every year dating back to 1975.  But, surprisingly, none of those reasons are actually 1975’s JAWS.  Why?  Because  Tim, co-host of this podcast based entirely on obsessing over 20th century pop culture, has never seen the first true summer blockbuster, JAWS. Until today.  So slap on some SPF and keep watch from the shoreline as Tim and Bob wade into the unfathomably PG-rated JAWS.

POP NOTES

  • JAWS was originally released on June 20th 1975 (exactly four moths before Tim’s birth).

  • The film’s cast included Roy Scheider (Brodie), Richard Dreyfus (Hooper), Robert Shaw (Quint), Lorraine Gary (Ellen) and film producer Carl Gottlieb (Meadows).

  • It was director Steven Spielberg’s second full length feature film release following 1974’s THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS. Prior to that, he had directed television episodes of NIGHT GALLERY (1969) and MARCUS WELBY, M.D. (1970) as well as the Made-For-TV features DUEL (1971) and SOMETHING EVIL (1972)

  • While never mentioned in the film itself, the Carcharodon Carcharias (or “great white”) has since been officially named Bruce, after Steven Spielberg’s lawyer at the time, Bruce Raynor.

  • JAWS was nominated for BEST PICTURE at the 1976 ACADEMY AWARDS. It went on to win three Oscars that night for BEST SOUND, BEST FILM EDITING and BEST ORIGINAL DRAMATIC SCORE (the second for composer John Williams following his 1972 win for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF).

  • During a visit to the film’s pre-production studio, filmmaker George Lucas (STAR WARS EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES) got his head trapped in the jaws of the prop shark. Intended as a simple prank on his good friend, Spielberg soon found himself dealing with the first of many mechanical malfunctions.

  • Brodie’s oft-quoted line “We’re gonna need a bigger boat” was an on set ad-lib by actor Roy Scheider. It was inspired by the film crew’s repeated use in regards to the production’s limited budget.
