As the theme song explained, it was “GI Joe against Cobra the enemy, fighting to save the day.” But action figure war is still action figure Hell which is why Joe Slepski sought out the more mature storylines of Marvel's comic adaptation. It became the basis of his own podcast, JOE ON JOE, so let's hear him discuss this ground-breaking take on a popular childhood toy-line

Joe Slepski is this host of the JOE ON JOE podcast, a look at the comic books and cartoons of the G.I. Joe franchise. It can be heard on APPLE PODCASTS, STITCHER and the homepage of www.joeonjoe.com.

POP NOTES

  • The first issue of Marvel’s G.I. JOE was released with a cover date of June 1982. There were 155 issues of the main series accompanied by four year-books, two mini-series (G.I. JOE AND THE TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE: ORDER OF BATTLE) and a 28 issue spin-off called G.I. JOE: SPECIAL MISSIONS (1986).

  • Writer Larry Hama based much of the series on his rejected pitch for a comic entitled FURY FORCE. That original proposal was set in the Marvel universe and followed an elite squad of hi-tech SHIELD agents.

  • In addition to authoring the comics, Larry Hama was responsible for naming much of the toy-line as well as developing and writing the accompanying file cards for each figure.

  • Prior to the Marvel series, variations of G.I. Joe had been featured as a comic strip in the military-themed magazine YANK (1942), two Korean-war based series in the 1950s and a two issue story line for DC COMICS SHOWCASE (issues 53 & 54) in the mid 60s.

  • G.I. JOE was the first comic book series to be advertised on television. These highly detailed animated spots bolstered sales as well as led to the launch of the multi-season animated series.

Tune back on Friday when Joe runs with the tramps who, like him, love BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. .
