Sure, we know its not a bird and yes we know its not a plane but do we even care anymore that it's Superman? Super heroes may be more popular than ever but fewer and fewer cosplayers are donning Kryptonian tights. Well podcaster Joe Slepski (JOE ON JOE) thinks the world still needs a Superman and today he'll discuss Ka-El's relevance with a fair amount of reverence for the Christopher Reeve version as first portrayed in the 1978's SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE.

Joe Slepski is this host of the JOE ON JOE podcast, a look at the comic books and cartoons of the G.I. Joe franchise. It can be heard on APPLE PODCASTS, STITCHER and the homepage of www.joeonjoe.com.

POP NOTES

  • SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was originally released on Friday, December 15th 1978. Also playing in the theaters were FORCE 10 FROM NAVARONE, CALIFORNIA SUITE and THE DEER HUNTER.

  • Screenwriters for the film included David Newman (BONNIE AND CLYDE), Leslie Newman (SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE), Robert Benton (KRAMER VERSES KRAMER) and Mario Puzo (THE GODFATHER).

  • Prior to the casting of Christopher Reeve, contenders for the role of Superman included Dustin Hoffman, Steve McQueen, Al Pacino and Muhammad Ali.

  • The film was in simultaneous production with the planned follow-up of SUPERMAN II (1980). With 75 percent of the sequel filmed, director Richard Donnor (THE OMEN) came into conflict with film rights owners Ilya and Alexander Salkind (THE FOUR MUSKETEERS) and was fired from SUPERMAN II. As a result the first film’s third act was drastically reworked and Richard Lester (A HARD DAY’S NIGHT) came on to direct the sequel.

  • With a production budget of $54 million dollars, SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE the most expensive film ever produced. This sum has since been surpassed numerous times, beginning with the $58 million dollar budget for 1988’s WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? Currently, 2011’s PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES holds the record with an estimated budget of $379 million dollars.

Tune back on Tuesday when Joe enlists in the entire 155 issue run of Marvel’s 1980s comic book version of GI JOE.
