Ménage Á Pop is a three times a week intimate discussion between two people and a piece of pop culture.
Did you get goosebumps from scary stories told in the dark? You know, swapped sleepover tales of jilted ghosts, ghastly ghouls and various things under the bed? Or did your childhood horror haunt at a slightly diffrent pace? On today's episode, comic creator Meredith Moriarty shares the slow burn terror she found in the childhood classic , The House With A Clock In It's Walls by John Bellair.
Listener's Note: Today's episode opens with a slightly longer monologue than normal. And while its contents are relevant to the world, if you are looking to get right to the main discussion, you can skip ahead to the 00:07:42 mark.
Meredith Moriarty is the Eisner nominated comic creator of THIRD SHIFT SOCIETY available at www.webtoons.com. Follow her on TWITTER @meredith_draws.
POP NOTES
THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS was first published in June of 1973. The novel was the first in a series of 12 books focusing on the main protagonist of Lewis Barnavelt.
The original published edition of the book included illustrations by renowned gothic artist Edward Gorey.
Author John Bellairs completed three novels in the series before his death at age 53 in 1991. He left behind two unfinished manuscripts and a detailed outline for where the series was heading.
The Bellair estate commissioned author Brad Strickland to finish Bellairs’s final two novels and then continue the series based on his notes.
The Lewis Barnavelt story came to a close with the publication of THE SIGN OF THE SINISTER SORCERER in October of 2008.
Brad Strickland also helped complete John Bellair’s JOHNNY DIXON fantasy series, co-authoring 1994’s THE DRUM, THE DOLL AND THE ZOMBIE and then authoring three additional novels, ending with 1999’s THE WRATH OF THE GRINNING GHOST.
