To Tim, video games have always been side scrolling plumbers chasing big mushrooms and bouncing stars. But a lot has changed since that issue of Nintendo Power and not just in the uncanny valley of graphics and game play. Eisner nominated Meredith Moriarty (THIRD SHIFT SOCIETY) present's the modern gamer's guise by unveiling the existential terrors she found in the 21st Century classic SILENT HILL 2.

POP NOTES

  • SILENT HILL 2 was released by Konami Computer Entertainment on Friday, September 21st 2001. Also released that day were Midway’s update of 1983’s SPYHUNTER, Techmo’s MONSTER RANCHER 3 and a second version of Sega’s PHANTASY STAR ONLINE.

  • The SILENT HILL franchise began with the February 23rd 1999 release of the first SILENT HILL. It has since expanded into eight other main games, the most recent of which was 2012’s SILENT HILL: DOWNPOUR.

  • The main storyline for the game drew inspiration from the Fydor Dostoevsky novel CRIME AND PUNISHMENT (1866) sharing a central protagonist haunted by their own actions and morality.

  • The layout of the town Silent Hill is based, in part, on San Bruno California, including its many creeks, ravines and canyons.

  • The game features six possible endings including a supernatural resurrection, an alien abduction and the reveal of a dog as the mastermind of the entire game.

Tune back on Friday when Meredith dusts off a favorite from her childhood bookcase, THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS.
