20th Century Pop! is a podcast where hosts Bob and Tim take a sociological look at the pop culture of the '80s and '90s.
Bob and Tim don’t always have to agree. In fact, it often makes for a more interesting podcast. And while they have both proclaimed a fandom for Pearl Jam, this listening party of their third album got a bit heated. Who loved it? Who loathed (parts) of it? And what does it all mean for their '90s credibility? Hear a divisive discussion on an overly packaged disc that did not include the dance hit "Vibeology." It's Pearl Jam's 1994 VITALOGY (look THAT word up).

POP NOTES
Th album was first released on vinyl on Tuesday November 22, 1994. Debuting at number 55 on the Billboard 200, it was the first record to feature on U.S charts since the rise of compact disc in 1988.
VITALOGY was officially released on compact disc and cassette two weeks later on Tuesday December 6th 1994. Released that same day were THE SWEETEST DAYS by Vanessa Williams and SIXTEEN STONE, the debut album back fellow grunge act Bush.
The album was composed and recorded during the 1993-1994 VERSES tour, with the earliest recordings beings “Tremor Christ” and “Nothingman in late 1993. Early versions of “Betterman” and “Satan’s Bed” can be found among live recordings of this tour.
Prior to release, the album was intended to be called LIFE. It was changed to VITALOGY after an 1899 medical book frontman Eddie Vedder had purchased at a garage sale.
The band line-up at the time of recording was singer Eddie Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Dave Abbruzzese.
Due to conflicts within the band, this would be the final album for both Dave Abbruzzese, who was then replaced by Jack Irons (formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers). Sadly, due to revised due to revised guidelines, Dave Abbruzzese was not eligible to be included in the band’s 2017 induction into the Rock And Roll hall of Fame.
Guitarist Stone Gossard is considered to be one of the founders of the Grunge music movement. This is due in part to his involvement with late ‘80 Seattle bands Green River and Mother Love Band.
